The Fruit Shall Set You Free

Fruits and vegetables are perennial sources of vitamins and nutrients that the body needs for optimum functioning. Not many know, however, that some varieties also promote and keep your teeth healthy. If you still believe the myth that sugary fruits only harm your dental health, it is time to know the truth.

The mouth contains millions of bacteria that metabolise sugar. This process produces acids that eat away at tooth enamel and causes tooth decay. This is the reason some people aren’t very fond of eating fruits – thinking the sugar it contains might harm their teeth. That should not be the case, though, as some fruits are actually beneficial to your dental health.

Here are some of the fruits that you should munch on:


Apples are not a direct substitute for your toothbrush. Studies suggest, however, that the fruit helps lower the level of plaque-causing bacteria in your mouth. This is because biting and chewing on an apple stimulates saliva production, which reduces plaque. Apples also contain malic acid, which may aid in dissolving teeth stains. With these facts, it is little wonder apples are regarded as “nature’s toothbrush” by some.


Bananas provide more than just an energy boost for your body; they also remove discolouration naturally. A ripe banana contains high amounts of potassium, magnesium, and manganese, which are components for removing stains. The banana peel is also a good source of calcium and antioxidants.


Pineapples contain high amounts of vitamin C for strengthening your gums. They are also great sources of bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme, which breaks down surface stains. In fact, due to the fruit’s natural benefits, natives of South and Central America have long been using pineapples as a medicinal plant.


Cucumbers are excellent bad breath neutralisers. Simply hold a slice to the roof of your mouth for a minute or so. Some also use cucumbers to treat mouth diseases like pyorrhoea.

Ultimately, good dental health comes with proper oral cleaning practices. After you munch on these fruits, do not forget to rinse and brush your mouth.
