Teeth Whitening

Tooth Whitening is the use of bleaching agents to lighten the colour of teeth that have not responded sufficiently to professional cleaning.

Tooth discolouration occurs for a variety of reasons:

• Surface stains due to lifestyle (smoking, coffee, tea and red wine)
• Age
• Poor oral hygiene, due to certain medications

It is important to note however that not everyone is suitable for tooth whitening. Factors contributing to this are:

• Tooth sensitivity
• Defective or absent tooth enamel
• Gum disease
• Presence of dentures
• Dental implants
• Crowns veneers or fillings
• Pregnancy or breast feeding

At Maven Dental Booragoon we offer our patients three types of teeth whitening:

Take Home Kit

• Impressions are taken
• Custom trays are then fabricated
• You are given these trays along with syringes of the bleaching agent
• It will take 2 weeks to complete; however the amount of time used to bleach after this is left up to the patient; some need less time, others a longer period of time

In-Surgery Bleaching

• The procedure takes just over an hour
• Your teeth are prepared and gums/lips protected leaving only the tooth surface exposed
• Whitening gel is then applied and left in situ for 15 minutes. This can be applied up to 3 times
• A high intensity light may be used to accelerate this process

Internal Bleaching

• Most commonly used for a tooth that has turned dark as a result of root canal treatment
• The bleaching agent is injected inside the tooth structure and left there for a week
• This may need to be done more then once
• Once complete, the bleaching agent is removed
