The Effects of Thumb Sucking

It’s normal and young children to suck their thumbs, fingers, or dummies. Thumb sucking provides the child with a feeling of security and comfort. However if thumb sucking continues past the age of 5, when permanent teeth start to grow, problems can occur.

The long term effects of extended thumb sucking can include:

  • Teeth being moved around, which can result in an overbite or underbite
  • Germs from the child’s thumb causing illness
  • A lisp can form due to ling term thumb sucking affecting the positioning of the jaw bone
  • The roof of the child’s mouth can change and/or become more sensitive
